This may be a humorous take, but it does reflect the debates going on between various book reviewers and Wilde. The "unsavoury suggestiveness" mentioned in this article is the very heart of the critics attack. The critics claimed that Wilde, being a known (or at least popularly believed to be) homosexual, had, by extension, created homosexual characters in his newly published "Picture of Dorian Gray". Wilde would eventually be brought to trial in defense of this book. The second issue the critics had with Wilde came to light while defending the book in the critics magazines. He made the claims that his work was a work of art, or a work of genius, which of course was scoffed at. I think time backed Wilde in this assumption, as many of us still read and enjoy this book nearly 120 years after it was written.
