* * * This Is A Work In Progress * * *

Title, author, and date of your text [you may replace all the text in this template with your own project's information, with the exception of the few places where it is specifically requested that you retain the directions; please delete the Work In Progress tag when you are finished with your annotation and commentary and ready to submit the project for a grade].

Insert full-text here.  For documents longer than 10 pages, you may choose to scan the text and insert a PDF file here.  For anything under 10 pages, please transcribe the text here, as annotating the text will be much easier if you can highlight terms you will annotate.  Group members may choose to divide up the transcription task.  No matter who transcribes the text, please be sure that AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE proofread it carefully.  It will be easiest to transcribe the text into some kind of word processing program, which offers spell-check and other editing features; then, once the text is accurate, you can cut and paste it into this page.

For a group of very short texts or a series of illustrations, you may prefer to insert the texts one at a time and provide annotations between them.  The Commentary section may still remain at the end of the page, to enable you to make comments about how these texts work together.

PLEASE ADHERE TO COPYRIGHT LAWS: While any text original to the Victorian period is now out of copyright, it is EXTREMELY important that you either transcribe the text yourself or provide a PDF of the ORIGINAL source.  If you scan a reprinted version of the text, then you may be violating copyright laws by posting online a version that is still under copyright.  If you have any questions about this, please see your instructor before posting a text here.

               Notes on the Text

Choose a highlight color to highlight words/phrases in the text that you would like to annotate.  (To highlight in a color: simply draw your cursor over a word to highlight it, then click on the paint bucket above and choose a color.)  If you find there are lots of terms you want to gloss, you may prefer to use multiple colors (e.g. green for proper names; blue for legal terms; pink for words/ideas common in the 19th century that may be unfamiliar to readers today).  If you use multiple colors, explain your color coding to your readers.

Organize your annotations here in whatever way seems most reader-friendly to you -- by your color categories, alphabetically by word/phrase, or in order that the words/phrases appear in the text.  If you have chosen a long text that you include as a PDF, you will not be able to highlight terms.  In that case, it will be easiest to organize your annotations by reference to the page numbers of the text.  If the PDF makes the original page numbers visible, use those numbers.

For ease of reading, double-space between notes.  For example:

Word/Phrase: Here's the note, which may include a definition of the term, a link to an external webpage with more information on the term, or other discussion of the term's significance to understanding this text.

                Commentary on the Text

In addition to notes on particular words/phrases in a text, you may be asked to provide some analysis or commentary on the text as a whole, or to comment on other collaborator's comments.  Your instructor will give you specific directions about what might be required/included here.  Please format comments as the example below indicates:

                Works Cited

Please be sure to cite reference works, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, scholarly articles, other 19th century sources, and other websites that you used in preparing this page.  In particular, it is extremely important to use quotation marks when copying material directly from another source, to provide a parenthetical citation to the source and relevant page number, and to include that source here.  If you do not know how/when to decide what to cite or how to format citations in MLA Style, please consult your instructor. [Please retain these directions.]

                For Additional Reading

This is the place to add bibliographic information for print OR online sources that usefully supplement your chosen text.  Please format entries for print sources in MLA style.  Please format links to websites using brief titles (e.g. The Charles Dickens Page) followed by a one-two sentence description of the contents of the site.  [For the benefit of future users, please do not delete these directions.]
